UPDATE: Due to debate on other bills, the House didn’t get to HB 1537 today. It is set to be heard tomorrow. The session will begin at 8am.
Over a month ago, we published an article explaining that eight Republicans joined with two Democrats in sponsoring House Bill 1537— otherwise known as the “Red Flag Bill”. This would enable a law enforcement officer to obtain a search warrant and seize an individuals firearm if they submit a sworn affidavit stating that they believe the person is “dangerous and in possession of a firearm”. The devil is in the details of the legislation.
After a news conference was held in support of HB 1537, backlash hit and I’m told that things got very uncomfortable for those supporting the bill in the days that followed. That is as it should be. The fact that they take your gun rights away first — and give you due process later — is alone problematic. Especially when no crime has been committed.
Thankfully, the bill came out of committee with an 11-2 Do Not Pass recommendation. It’s on today’s calendar for a vote and Rep. Rick Becker (R – District 7) is carrying the bill to the floor asking for it to be defeated. As I write this, the House is in session. When they’ll get to the bill, I’m not sure. But if you’re interested in watching the proceedings, you can click here. Just go to the bar that says “In Progress” and click on it. If you are reading this after the House concludes its proceedings, you will click on “Adjourned”.
