NDGOP Chairman Rick Berg sent out an email today reminding Republicans across the state that Tom Campbell is no longer an active candidate for U.S. House. Berg was sure to let readers know that:
“… Kelly Armstrong has been endorsed by Tom Campbell. Due to state law, you will still see Tom Campbell’s name on the ballot – but Tom dropped out of the race to promote a unified ticket! He agrees that Kelly Armstrong in Congress would be “what’s best for the state.”
It’s an interesting decision for the NDGOP to send the email as we head into Tuesday’s primary. As the Republican-endorsed candidate, I don’t think Armstrong has too much to be concerned about. He recently released polling data that showed him with a 22-point lead over Democratic opponent Mac Schneider.
But I’m guessing the party wants to do what they can to ensure as many votes possible for Armstrong in the primary. After all, not only will Campbell’s name still be on the ballot, but after Armstrong secured the party’s endorsement at the State Convention in April, fellow Republicans Paul Schaffner and Tiffany Abentroth decided to continue on to the primary as well. Nevertheless, I’m guessing Schaffner and Abentroth won’t be much of a threat to Armstrong for the nomination. In fact, I’ll predict that Campbell will get more votes than either of them.
I think it’s a safe bet that Armstrong comes out on top when Tuesday’s results come rolling in. He will head into November as the NDGOP’s official nominee and favorite over Democrat Mac Schneider.
