ACTION ALERT: Homeschool Bill Set for House Vote Monday

Last month we published an article explaining Rep. Dan Johnston’s (R – District 24) HB 1052. In addition to clarifying the term “parent” as including a child’s legal guardian, the bill would open up a variety of opportunities for homeschool families across the state. For example, suppose a parent desires to strengthen a specific content area for their child. They would be free to use a tutor to provide that instruction. With the advancement of technology, other parents might choose from a number of on-line options now available to students across the country. These opportunities are technically not legal under the current law.

The bill came out of the House Education Committee with a 13-0 Do Pass recommendation earlier this week and has now been placed on the House Floor Calendar for Monday, January 21st. It’s vitally important that supporters of this bill contact their representatives now and ask them to give HB 1052 a green vote. As I wrote last month, this bill is exactly what parents across North Dakota need when it comes to the education of their children. It has the potential to be the most impactful piece of legislation we’ve seen for many homeschool families in the state. But we need your help. Please, contact your representatives today.
