Two weeks ago we published an article explaining that Rep. Dan Johnston (R – District 24) is working with the North Dakota Homeschool Association (NDHSA) in proposing a key piece of legislation. In a nutshell, HB 1052 would address a 2007 Attorney General’s opinion that interprets North Dakota’s current law as restricting those who can supervise home education to parents. You can see a full explanation here.
As NDHSA’s Theresa Deckert explains:
“This bill will make it clear that a legal guardian may home school rather than be assumed. It will also clarify that a parent is the one who determines what methods and manner of instruction are employed. This will allow a parent to use a tutor, choose an online program or be part of a collaborative learning situation such as Classical Conversations. Hopefully these changes will clarify this for both parents and school districts.”
We cannot stress enough how important this bill is to homeschool families across North Dakota. In the words of Rep. Johnston:
“It correctly affirms the right of parents to direct the education of their child and reinforces educational choice in North Dakota.”
The House Education Committee is set to hold a hearing on HB 1052 on Tuesday, January 8th, at 10:30am in Coteau A Room. We would ask that if you can attend the hearing to please do so. If you cannot attend in person, but are willing to communicate your support for the bill via e-mail or phone, you can find the committee’s contact information here.
